Not so “smart” meters

Not so “smart” meters
“Smart” meters and EMF

Many people are concerned about “smart” meters. This is because the “smart” part of “smart” meters is that they communicate remotely with your power company. They do this via a radio frequency, some once a day, some every few minuets/seconds. A smart meter basically contains a “smart” phone attached to the side of your home that tells the power company how much electricity you are using AND what you are using that electricity for.

An exception to this is the TWACS “smart” meters which use low frequency (400 – 600 Hz) pulses that ride on the power line itself. These pluses travel both ways, to and from the utility company, they are not stopped by the transformer or ANY commonly available “DE” filter. You may opt out but ALL the pulses from the TWACS meters around you and the power company are entering your home with the power. Cutting of the circuits in your home, especially your bedrooms at night, is the ONLY way to stop these low frequency pulses.

Every electrical device has it’s own unique electrical signature, so when you turn on your TV or coffee pot for example, the “smart” meter computer records that and then the “cell phone” tells the power company.

First “smart” meter question: Seeing as “smart” meters use the same frequencies as your cell phone and your kids cell phones and your neighbors cell phones why does adding one more “cell phone” to hundreds that are already there make a difference?

Well, it may not be the radio frequency (RF) put out by the “smart” meter that is the main problem! For the computer and “cell phone” built into the “smart” meter to work they use a switching mode power supply. Switching mode power supplies are known to create ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI) in the form of high voltage transients called by many – “dirty electricity” (DE). This power quality (PQ) issue in conjunction with the homes electrical service is for some what is a causing or exacerbating their health problems.

Next “smart” meter question (same as the first) – seeing as TV’s, computers, printers, audio systems, cell phone chargers ALL use switching mode power supplies, why would adding one more to dozens already in most homes make a noticeable difference?

All the switching mode power supplies in your home are from a variety of manufactures, switching different amounts of electricity to different voltages and putting out a broad spectrum of high voltage transients – “DE”. They are creating significant “dirt” on your home electrical system but the frequencies are all over the place.

“Smart” meters however, in any giver area, tend to be all from the same manufacturer, with the same switching mode power supply, switching the same amount of electricity (for the same built in computer and “cell phone”) and therefore ALL produce the same high voltage transient “DE” signature. It is not just your “smart” meter that is causing your problems it is the hundreds, if not thousands of “smart” meters in your neighborhood – collectively.

That “DE” signature is part of the electricity coming into your home. Yes your “smart” meter may be the main source but all the other “smart” meters collectively are contributing, especially with TWACS meters. Some people are sensitive to these specific frequencies.

What to do?

#1 You can opt out. This will help a little but there will still be hundreds (thousands) of of other “smart” meters around you ALL broadcasting RF and ALL creating the same “DE” signature that can still enter your home.

#2 You can turn off the circuits in your home. The wires in your walls put out an electric field 6 to 8 feet in all directions, of which this “DE” is part of. Turning off the neutral and power of these circuits is the most efficient way to solve the problem. The “DE” is often on the neutral as well. Disconnect the circuit, disconnect the electric field and all the EMF/“DE” that was part of it. This is a simple, complete and very practical solution especially at night in your sleep area but may not be so practical during the day.

# 3 Add a “DE” filter. For day time “DE” reduction you need a whole house, EMI, (“DE”), power quality (PQ) filter directly attached to your breaker panel where the electricity comes into your home. The most efficient filters are in line active filters but these tend to be around $10,000 or more! The most commonly available and popular whole house “DE” filters on the market are passive, parallel style filters and cost $1,200 to $2,000+/-.

These will HELP filter (reduce) the amount of “DE” coming into your home from “smart” meters, the power company and other sources in your area. (Individual, plug in filters cannot do this as well.)

Being attached to both “legs” in the panel they also help filter (reduce) the “DE” being produced inside your home on ALL the circuits. If you have a device producing a lot of “DE”, that you cannot live without, a plug in filter next to that device can give additional help.

Most whole house, parallel (passive) style filters have similar electronic components, work the same way and filter very similar frequencies and independent, third party tests confirm all get very similar results. So why pay $2,000 or $1,600 or $1,200 for just a filter when you can have an EMFSafe cut off switch with a whole house PQFilter™ built in for less money?

Our real world, in home results are showing an average “DE” reduction, measured with both a Stetzer and Greenwave EMI meter, of 85% with 95% on some circuits. (Every home is different with unique “DE” issues so this is not a guarantee of results.)

Starting at just $1,198 the EMFSafeSwitch with PQ1 lets you remotely cut off selected circuits any time (at night for example to create an EMF mitigated sleep sanctuary) AND filter “DE” in your whole house, on all circuits, 24/7.

For heavier “DE” loads from solar panel inverters, pool pumps, various types of heating systems etc. we have the PQFilter™2 which provides 50% more filtration. For PQFilter™2 instead of a PQFilter™1 add $299* to the following prices.

  •  NP-01-PQ1 – 1 NP circuit + PQFilter1™ –  $1,198*
  •  NP-02-PQ1 – 2 NP circuits + PQFilter1™ – $1,398*
  •  NP-04-PQ1 – 4 NP circuits + PQFilter1™ – $1,799*
  •  NP-08-PQ1 – 8 NP circuits + PQFilter1™ –  $2,198*

“NP” = neutral and power disconnect,

“PO” = Power Only disconnect also available.

We recommend “NP” for all circuits for people already EMF sensitive. An economic solution could be “NP” for plugs & “PO” for lights.
